On April 3, 2004 the III Open Junior Tournament in Sambo "Kurinnoy Cup" was held in "Boretz" Sports school. As it was before, the fight of young Sambo wrestlers that became more and more thrilling from round to round made spectators watch it with great interest.
According to the draw, the outstanding "Sambo-70" school had to meet "Boretz" school, last Cup finalists, right in the first bout. The boys from "Boretz" stood firm against their formidable opponents, displayed good wrestling and won with the score 8:3. This victory helped them to reach the finals in the 1st group though the opponents were strong. In the 2nd group the team "Peter" from St. Petersburg was confidently moving to the finals and left their opponents no chance.
The final bout was really a culmination point of the competitions. Both teams were eager to win, any compromise was unthinkable. Lightweights from St. Petersburg created a serious situation with the score 5:1 after the first six bouts, that was a real bid for success. Moscow fans became nervous.
However, what happened later one could call a real miracle. "Boretz", deprived of any right to loose, with every coming bout started to add 1 point in its favour . The home walls did help, the reaction of numerous Moscow supporters was thunderous when the arm of a young Sambo player from "Boretz" was raised up by the referee to declare the victory.
Before the decisive meet of heavy weights the score was equal 5:5! That meant the victory in "Kurinnoy Cup" had to go to the team whose contestant would win. Really, the most dramatic moment of the whole Tournament! Heavy load of responsibility fell on powerful shoulders of both Sambo wrestlers from Moscow and St. Petersburg. As a result, Boris Dichkov, a young strongman from the Northern capital, in a very beautiful style managed to score the victory for his team in that hard and strenuous situation, displaying courage and manly character.
It could be the most intriguing bout of all the "Kurinnoy" Cups. The delight of St. Petersburg team marked the end of this wonderful tournament.Spectators and participants will remember its emotions and passion of the bouts for a long time. The guests won the Cup with the score 6:5. "Boretz" won the second place the third time in the row though the victory was so close.
Many honoured guests were present at the competitions : Aslambek Aslakhanov - Counsellor of the Russian President, Doctor of Sciences, Professor, Lieutenant-general; David Rudman - Sambo World champion, twice European champion in Judo, founder of the world-known "Sambo-70" club, President of US Sambo federation; Renat Laishev,First Vice president of the Russian Sambo and Judo federations, general director of "Sambo-70" sports and educational center and also representatives of the Moscow Western region, sports specialists from different cities, many prominent figures of our state.
